Biography - A little something about...

Mario Reyes (Papi Picasso)

I was born and raised in Co-Op City, Bronx NY a.k.a. The High Class projects (lol).

I spent 6 years in the Air Force where I obtained my Associates through the Community College of the Air Force, and my Bachelors in Science for Computer Technology from University of Maryland University College where I’m currently registered for my Masters in Non-Profit and Association Management.

My genre or style of writing is Spoken word poetry with a rap edge. My writing is observational couple with lessons from my past. Some are storied and littered with self-analysis. My muses are my children and my legacy. Even conceptual poems are anchored in what I hope to impart on my children. “A wise man learns from others mistakes, and fools by their own”

I first started writing in 10th grade with my friends after listening to the CNN album, TONY (Top Of New York) we would write raps during class and spit them before basketball practice. It landed us in Detention several times; catholic school… I would write raps for my friends in basic training about the days/weeks hardships, they would all crowd around my bunk to listen and laugh and I poked fun at our Training Instructor; received extra duty for that. It wasn’t until I got to my first duty station in Hampton VA, that I met a girl, whom challenged me to stop writing raps to sound hard and instead she would give me words to which I would prove to be the concept of each piece.

Out of that I stopped “rapping”; couldn’t stay on beat anyway – and started performing spoken word. Although I participated in several African American memorial shows, talent shows, open mics, and festivals - till this day she’s the better poet.

My perfect day is a Heineken and a shot of jack Daniels in front of the basketball court on my block while my brovas spit freestyles over a J-Dilla beat. Followed by a trip to the science museum with my kids and watching them play archeologist in the dinosaur exhibit. Riding my bike somewhere for no reason. Volunteering in ject’s and actually reaching dem yout I’m talking to! Eating pernil at titi Evelyns house while all my cousins and the kids cause havoc and my aunts talk shit calling each of us the wrong name. Standing in front of a crowd that can appreciates the difference between metaphors and similes – and finally ending with the muse that’s not here for amusement, to watch Netflix and “chill”

I draw inspiration from the juxtaposition of idealism and reality, the hopes versus the fear; And the realization they aren’t mutually exclusive simply by products of each other. The poets responsibility is to navigate his/her words to communicate not just the poets perspectives but the readers potential.

My life... Is all I have.
