The Work (Books, Film, Plays, Performances, etc.) The vibrant Atlanta arts scene inspired Battle to produce two spoken word albums and an alternatively styled book. Her first book, "More Than Extremes, Its the Space Between", is compiled of more than 40 excerpts of poetry and prose. She is also published in the anthology “Blues Arrival: Migration of the Queer Black South”, and a series of other online publications. She is also a sought after facilitator and event host who has written a variety of curriculum designed to harness artistic expression for social justice activism. Battle is a Slam Coach, stage actress, musician, and writer of various other literary works featured in a number venues.
Award/Prizes/Recognitions/Titles Battle is a two time member of a nationally competitive "Slam Team", and has a solid reputation as a host of open mic events and art shows in the Atlanta area.
Writing Favorites ( favorite Poets, Poems, Writers, etc.) I adore the writings of Nikky Finney, Nikki Giovanni, Rita Dove, Emily Dickinson, Tina McElroy Ansa, Sonia Sanchez, Octavia Butler, and Richard Wright.
Genre/Style of writing...Battle’s style of writing is informal free verse accented with an unlikely blend of Paul Laurence Dunbar and Emily Dickinson if they both flowed to hip hop beats.
Started writing at a very young age, and found a powerful literary voice while attending college.
My perfect day... I would be retired, elderly, and sitting in Paris at the Les Deux Magots having a chai tea with my sweetheart while writing about James Baldwin sitting in same spot. There would be rain, flowers, chocolate croissants and I would be crossing off the last item on my bucket list for a life well lived.
Inspiration... The resilience of the human spirit. Good music. Beautiful scenery. Recognizing God-ness. Conversations with the kids. Secrets. Hugs. Failure. Rejection. Injustice. The life stories of others. My Momma.
My life...is an ever evolving representation of the most high; it is brilliant, and glowing with intentionality and love.
