Poem 101

By Marcus G. Taylor

You would have been my son
Talk of you with my last name
Only if you wanted it: my love would be the same
I would have taught you how to be a man
You would have taught me how to be a father
Pass my wisdom on to you
You would have been my son and never been a bother

You would have been my son
Your loving mother would have birthed an innocent me
The things that bound us would have made you free
It hurts that your DNA makes you another’s son
The same hurt I caused when I was on the run
But, if a time should come, you can have my hand
You may have teachers, but if you need a father, I will stand

I was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia
Georgia State University graduate.
