At the end of his life, Gadreel revealed that ever since his imprisonment he had become obsessed with redeeming himself and regaining his good name to the point that he lost sight of the true mission: protect humanity no matter the cost, putting them above even the angels themselves.

Gadreel has a very strong sense of honor and loyalty, believing angels to be creatures of compassion rather than wrath and when Castiel meets to discuss him changing sides Gadreel immediately refuses because of his belief in Metatron's cause. As a result, Chef Leo tries to eat Sam to heal his own cancer. When he manifests, Sam's eyes glow white and sometimes blue. He even easily overpowered Crowley in Sam's mind and he was barely affected by Crowley punching him and he badly beat him with just a few kicks and punches. This caused Gadreel's grace to explode out of him, killing Gadreel and destroying Heaven's dungeon as he intended. Gadreel was the angel that guarded the Garden of Eden from evil, particularly Lucifer, who managed to trick Gadreel into letting him in. He was an indirect catalyst for Lucifer's corruption of man, the creation of demons, God's leaving, the Apocalypse and thus the events of the entire series itself, making him arguably one of the most significant characters of the series. This shows that Gadreel was somewhat selfish, at least after his imprisonment, but he came to understand what was truly important. To avoid Sam rejecting Ezekiel, and possibly dying, Dean agrees to keep the possession a secret from Sam. However, Gadreel retakes control saying he has withstood much worse torture and can wait forever. In the television series Supernatural (9th season), Gadreel (Tahmoh Penikett) possesses Sam Winchester and takes the identity of the angel Ezekiel to try to redeem himself for having let the Serpent into the Garden of Eden. "Ezekiel" tells Dean that he is only barely back to half-strength and using his powers like that weakens him and will force him to stay in Sam longer than either wants. Despite this and his weakened state, he is compassionate to a fault, shown when he resurrects Castiel and Charlie despite knowing it will weaken him because Dean was distraught by their deaths. However, he was still outmatched by the Seraph Castiel, who knocked him out.
