I started with The Heart of Saturday Night, which I think for someone who's not familiar with his music, is a good place to start, superb album, I don't know what it is with Waits, he's so unique, his voice is earthy, his songs, are songs from the street, he sings about the highs and lows of life, and pulls no punches, Bar rooms, pool halls, and the more seedy side of life! If Nighthawks at the Diner has a flaw, it's that Waits' beatnik spiel sometimes overwhelms the music, and a number of the "songs" are more spoken word routines than anything else. This is the Waits album I heard first it also my favorite of his albums (well this and Bone Machine). On this ,Tom's fourth release, he completely succeeds in melding the Barfly-Bukowsky-Boho-meets The Beats influences into a cohesive and focused (if a barfly's eyes can focus)piece of work that is unmistakably Tom's own. This live recording was actually recorded WAY back in October of 1975, now newly re-mastered, and as an audiophile am happy to report they did a SUPERB job in the digital remastering of this album onto CD. But "Better Off Without a Wife" and "Nobody" show he hadn't lost the ability to write a memorable song, sing it all the way through, and make it connect.

That's the best thing about this CD is it plays great as a whole or you can program just the ballads and you have one of the greatest late night albums in history. Small change is an immense album for a late night melancholic solo session. I intend to purchase his whole catalogue! It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness.
