taming of the shrew sam wanamaker playhouse

The Taming of the Shrew is at Sam Wanamaker Playhouse from 8th February until 18th April 2020. Located on the bank of the River Thames in Bankside's Cultural Quarter, Shakespeare's Globe welcomes thousands of visitors to experience world renowned productions of Shakespeare every day. We saw Richard III and despite the modernist production, I'd relaxed into the concept in a couple of minutes. The Sam Wanamaker Playhouse is transformed by designer Liam Bunster for this production of perhaps the Bard's most problematic play. It creates – as noted in the programme – a space for the performers to explore and play with, and for the most part this is successful. The Playhouse is the indoor venue used in winter and offers a very different experience to a Globe show. At the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, London, until 18 April. Wooden, uninspired acting from most of the cast. All rights reserved. The performance was excellent. Luckily there are some moments – though these are few and far between – that shine through, with Mattia Mariotti's performance as both Tranio and Grumio mining the lines for all the sarcastic digs to make the text clear and full of meaning. Clocking in at three hours and 15 minutes, its pacing drags (particularly when sat on the backless wooden benches) and it's unclear what the production wants to highlight, such as Katherina's entire personality. Its a small stage but makes it so intimate. The Taming of the Shrew is arguably one of Shakespeare's most controversial comedies. A raised platform leading to the upper gallery divides the space somewhat in two, and there are plenty of other ladders and platforms for the nine-strong cast (plus two musicians) to nimbly climb across throughout the show. But overall there's a sense of lad culture not fully honed, as Hortensio (Ryan Ellsworth) and Gremio (Raymond Anum) take several shots of whiskey while professing they would both like to marry Bianca, or as Petruchio's (Paul Ready) servants ignore him while lighting all the many candles. No one really seems to react to anyone else and some of the verse-speaking is painful. Ironically, sister Bianca (Evelyn Miller) has more attitude.

Among all of Shakespeare’s plays it provides manna to those fully signed up to our modish obsession with revisionism and the desire to remake classic plays in ways that talk to contemporary cultural anxieties.

As always in this small space, it was an immersive experience with the actors mixing with the audience. I have read criticism that the Performance of Kate was lacking the usual dynamism and shrewishness. Melissa Riggall’s obedient Kate is more mouse than shrew, while Paul Ready’s charmless Petruchio is just tediously cruel. The cast were assigned roles organically during the rehearsal process which are subject to change: this may explain why everyone speaks with the same thudding monotony but doesn't answer why Michelle Terry, the Globe's artistic director and one of our greatest Shakespeareans, is currently in the largely forgettable role of Lucentio's servant Biondello. The Globe goes further, in a production by Maria Gaitanidi that sets out to defamiliarise the text entirely, partly to explore how entrenched opinions regarding Petruchio's coercive taming of Kate might prejudice our understanding of what the play is actually about. Perhaps a few more weeks in the rehearsal room would give this show the lift it needs. Katherina (Melissa Riggall) in particular seems furthest from character description, with no vim or wild nature and bored by the whole affair. The Sam Wanamaker Playhouse is the brand new candlelit indoor theatre, located on the Shakespeare's Globe site and is accessed through the main foyer. When the characters switch roles, there’s scarcely any change in physique or voice.

Perhaps theatrical experiments need to reach a conclusion before being presented to the public. Liam Bunster’s design has added extensions across the stage, but does more to obscure than enlighten. The RSC recently staged a semi-successful gender flipped version, feminising the roles of Baptista and Petruchio et al in ways that pointed up the inherent absurdity of a power dynamic determined by gender. In a seemingly desperate bid to inject some energy on stage they occasionally, inexplicably break into song, with musicians plucking away in a corner like the last boy at a house party who won’t put down the acoustic guitar. But despite the gorgeous-looking set and promises of a theatrical experiment, this Shrew is all bark and no bite. The seats can be uncomfortable, but it is worth it for the experience.

This Shakespeare performance is not suitable for those unfamiliar with the text. With few redeemable qualities, Maria Gaitanidi’s production lacks the most basic clarity and does nothing to question the play’s misogyny. Max Stafford-Clark removed from online project following backlash, Richard Eyre and Ian McKellen to teach schoolchildren drama online, Nottingham Playhouse announces Cinderella pantomime, Maureen Lipman and David Suchet recognised in Queen’s birthday honours. The cast are, of course, exceptional and I feel like I have a completely new appreciation for this play. By signing up you are confirming you are 16 or over.
