So far people have reviewed this album based on what it is NOT rather than what it is: it is NOT Astral Weeks, or Moondance, there is no doubt. We are so fortunate that Van is so devoted to the music, still kicking a** at 73 years old! Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2018. The effect is like sitting in a small club, right up front, and hearing some of the best musicians in the world playing their jazz-inflected blues and hearing it sung by a seventy-something master with the intensity of a young man -- a younger Van than the one who has occasionally in the last couple of decades seemingly just phoned it in. This is a relative return to form, with a strong regular band, and Van on fine form, singing well, and sounding positive and bright.There are half a dozen new original Van songs, and some of them go along with an infectious swing and are beautifully arranged, like Got to Go Where the Love Is. Love this Van. Another Morrison Magic Moment, I loved this album from start to end and honestly did not expect the pure artistic genius to come from an artist that is pushing out albums at a rate that sets the bar very high. Some of the reviewers have criticized the album for lacking variety, but that, in fact, is one of its strengths. Also like the Stones' album, the music here is the product of musicians clearly having a good ole time in the studio playing what they love and keeping it pristine, layered but layered the way live music is layered, without multiple tracks and overdubs.

I love the Chicago-style blues of the Stones' "Lonesome and Blue," but I love more the subtler and no less intense and passionate blues of this album. 4.5 out of 5 stars. I have all but one album that he has made, but "Versatile" was so embarrassingly lifeless and even awkward that I considered breaking my habit of buying anything he put out. The Prophet Speaks is Van Morrison’s 40th studio album and will be released on 12/7. I don’t think there was a single crackle or pop. I can like this and not be hung up that there is no Domino or Tupelo Honey, because I like this kind of music too.
This album is full of jazz and blues and is one of the best recorded albums I've heard in awhile. To my mind, this is the best CD that Van has made in many years.
It would be more honest for me to have given it 4 stars, but for 50 years I have been a Van Fan and with every new album I think it is "pretty good" until a few years later when I look back on the same album and think "what a great album!" Well, after a five-decade run of something bordering on VM hero-worship, I'm finally done. What else do you need to know?
